A focused look at the webs weaved inside the library…

Each month, a new webcomic will be chosen at random from the SpiderForest Library for us to read by the end of the month. Then, we’ll convene in a public voice chat on our Discord Server in which a discussion will be held where the comic will briefly be summarized, and one by one we’ll give our thoughts about the various elements within.

How is this discussion going to work?

We’ll go through various topics of discussion around the webcomic (plot, characters, artwork, paneling, specific scenes, etc.) and each one we’ll share any thoughts we might have regarding them.

What if I don’t want to talk?

Not everyone has to chime in or share thoughts, it’s more than okay to simply listen to the discussion.

Monthly Illustration

At the end of the month I will also be creating a fan illustration for the webcomic we read, and if any other artists would like to join me in this, I think it could be special as a bookend for the month’s webcomic!

Ultimately, the general idea behind this is to simply broaden the familiarity with the offerings at SpiderForest as a community, and maybe even introduce people to comics they might not have read otherwise.

This Month’s Webcomic is…
The Quest of Casey Tailor!
Casey Tailor has an almost perfect life but when a mysterious fairy woman steals his little sister away he must run off on an adventure to save her and put everything back to the way it was. Between an angry girl who turns into a bird, a boisterous fairy woman, and a sad young man, hopefully someone can help him along the way... Although, there also seems to be trouble brewing at Glassia Palace, exactly where Casey is headed.
So How long do I have, and when will we meet?

We’ll have until March 31st to read the comic!

The meeting will take place in the Public Voice Chat Channel at 1 PM CST
  • I really love this idea, and I would appreciate carving out time to read everyone's comics. I joined last year and there's still a lot of stories I haven't read. I especially love the idea of hyping each other up and discussing them.
  • I'd be down for this... despite that I read many of the comics here, there are ones that have either fallen off my radar, or I have never taken the time to try out post app-season. And who wouldn't want more eyes on their comics?
  • This is a good idea, I'd love to be a part of it :D I think encouraging more engagement with active reading of other comics would be a great way to get to know everyone more and definitely receive that critical feedback
  • I'm in! I've read this one before, but time to do a binge and catch up!
  • OKAY I have read- I am ready to discuss! :D
  • So the live discussion is a bit far out of my Timezone for a sunday evening, so i'm gonna drop my thoughts here. I love the world building and environmental detail in Soul to Call. This was my second read and there was lots of nice details I missed on my first. Especially the use of graffitti in the background and the different types of monsters. This comic always had me asking loads of questions, why did The Fall happen? Why were some people killed straight away and not others? I feel like this is a really slow burn in terms of stories, where we've barely scratched the surface about who everyone is and how they came to be here.
Plus the art is phenomenal- each character is so distinct!
  • Ah! Sorry about that 😔 I appreciate your input though, and thank you so much for participating!

As for the comic, the care and attention given to the backgrounds is definitely a point I've consistently admired from it. And the monsters! Something that really makes the world of this comic stand out are these monsters and the anathema -- it keeps things fresh in a comic about a post-cataclysm society. It's not only about monsters and the struggles of humanity, but the extra dynamic adds more of a complicated relationship with it; Something you can feel affecting the characters in a way that feels unique to the genre.

At the core, this series is a character drama, and the characterization is interesting and understandable. I think even for a character like Eve who has been given relatively a glimpse thus far, you can feel the intention. My favorite bit of characterization is this kind of confrontation Eve had with Tiffany. I think one of the main reasons Eve could see right through Tiffany is that they're both playing a similar game within their means. Both Tiffany and Eve appear to have this motivation of trying to work the system from within to shape their environment for the better, the inherent character difference is that Tiffany is doing it through personal connections, and Eve is doing it through the cold ladder of authority. They are good "rivals" in that sense, they may not understand each other directly, but they both know different sides of the same game -- a game that often requires a painful amount of emotional distance and numbness.
  • Thanks again for a great first book club! And I had to draw Eli because I needed to draw a flowing cowl 🙏

    On to the next comic!
  • Sorry I couldn't make the discussion But Soul to Call is awesome! Definitely agree about the monsters, they are so scary. >_< I like how different the types are and I like how they're introduced, mostly killing people and showing how dangerous they are but even the intro for the clinger was chilling because the characters already knew about them and were dealing with other stuff so they just kinda moved on while I was still thinking about it, like, WTF is that thing! Very intriguing world building. Also love the characters and how they play off each other, a great mix of personalities that are very different and their goals conflicting leads to fun drama but I especially love how much the main cast end up caring for each other. <3 STC fanart

    Looking forward to reading Arrhythmia!
  • I have been intrigued and sucked in by StC since it first came into me radar. The lore in the story is so rich, and the bonds between the characters transcends the horrific events going on around them all.

I've always been in awe of how seamlessly the art unfolds, the character styles and the monster designs are definitely unique and make StC stand out.

The character development is stellar, and it's been very cool to watch each person in the cast learn and grow as things develop!
  • I was a bad girl and didn't do my homework... but I'm making it up for it now. I will add to this post as I get further into the archive.

I will say, that initially I thought this was simply a bit of madcap tales about would be theives in the 1800's Victorian style era... I did think it odd that the MC was able to essentially parkour like Superman, but beyond that I didn't really question things. Then I see the guy with the glowing mace and I'm like "Wait a minute..." And the true Aha comes on this page.
Woo ho ho kay! That explains some things.
I will say I'm enjoying the writing style... thoughtful, insightful, and some really good zingers overall. I like how the beginning doesn't shy away from "I'm bored as all get out" discussions about everything and nothing that happens a lot during long dry watches (as a former military member can appreciate).
Though... the MC's long-winded speeches on occasion drag in the wrong ways... There is a point where I will want to skip to the end of the dialogue, and that risks me missing something. (and - though I'm sure it is intentional - it makes him very irritating.)
Still reading... will edit with thoughts as I go!

Edit 11/27/23: I really like the angle on This Panel
  • @Aron Oooo the upshot on this first panel is gorgeous work.
